Right from the opening issue of Historia, it’s clear that this is unlike any Wonder Woman story that came before it, with DeConnick and Jimenez drawing heavily from Greco-Roman mythology and the classic art of the era. With Wonder Woman Historia now complete, here is a look at how the critically acclaimed series helps redefine the mythology behind the DC icon for modern audiences, how it positions the Amazons and the Olympian Pantheon within the context of the wider DCU, and how it stands as a living tribute to the enduring Wonder Woman legacy, including the work of the late, great George Perez. As its title suggests, Wonder Woman Historia goes into details surrounding the origins of the Amazons and their leader Queen Hippolyta, exploring their culture and their complicated dynamic with the Ancient Greek pantheon of classical deities. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, each installment of the three-issue miniseries is illustrated by a different superstar artist, with Phil Jimenez kicking things off, Gene Ha bringing the middle chapter to life, and Nicola Scott closing out the initial leg of this epic tale. One of the first titles announced for DC Black Label in 2018, DC’s publishing imprint oriented towards more mature readers, with stories often outside of the main DC Universe’s continuity was Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons.

On the Aarne Thompson Scale, Swan Lake can be found under type 300: Princess and Dragons. The Ballet was composed in 1875-1876, although there is some debate and inaccuracies about the actual origins of the tale itself. The tale itself does not come along in great detail like most of the traditional fairy tales, as it was originally told in the form of the Ballet, which was composed by Tchaikovsky (the musical genius who also scored the ballets of Sleeping Beauty and the Nutcracker). Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Title: We Contain Multitudes by Sarah Henstra but now I have read the trilogy and am convinced I’m going to read the entire Chronicles of Ixia including all of the novellas and short stories because, as I said, I am obsessed. WHY oh why did it take me so long to finally read these books? The first book spent ages on my TBR list and even once I’d finally selected it as my next read I assumed I’d probably only read the one and not the full trilogy, etc. I just wanted to clarify this for anyone confused because I know I was at first lol. I’ll list the full series with their sub-series below. For this review, I’m only discussing the Poison Study trilogy aka Chronicles of Ixia books 1-3. I’ll also note that the Poison Study trilogy and Soulfinders trilogy follow main character Yelena while the Glass trilogy follows main character Opal. Okay just to quickly preface this review… The Chronicles of Ixia series is currently comprised of three trilogies: Poison Study trilogy (books 1-3) followed by the Glass trilogy (books 4-6) and Soulfinders trilogy (books 7-9). I’ve been writing One-Line Reviews as a way to keep this blog going despite not being able to commit as much time to it as before, but every once in a while I can’t resist returning to my wildly wordy style. Did you miss my lengthy, meandering reviews? Haha. |
